About

Richmond, North Yorkshire

The Stanwick Arms sits in the picturesque Yorkshire village of Aldbrough St John, and has sat there for some 300 years. Though its exact date of construction still remains a mystery, we know for sure it was built for purpose as a coach house.

Back then the sleepy village of Aldbrough boasted three public houses, which proved popular with many local residents. By the 1880’s the village had become notorious for drunken rows and brawls over the weekends and more notably so, the village Feast in August. An Aldbrough resident at the time even recalled a particularly wet village feast where a group of men were seen carrying an intoxicated friend on a large wooden door, tipping him into the beck when they reached the bridge.

As more scandalous stories circulated, they reached the ears of the Dowager Duchess at Stanwick. She decided enough was enough and swiftly demolished two of the pubs. The remaining pub, The Fleece, was renamed as Stanwick Arms.

Over the years the Stanwick Arms has undergone periods of significant change, but none more so than its most recent facelift.

Our vision was to create a space that brought the village community together, respecting the old and welcoming the new. We’ve renovated the space above the main pub into seven ensuite bedrooms, as well as upgrading our kitchen and bar. You’ll find hand-finished touches throughout, including our beech booths and the bar top itself.

Today, The Stanwick Arms is a charming public house, offering classic pub food alongside an ever changing seasonal menu and plenty of northern charm. Using local suppliers wherever we can, community values are at the core of everything we do and we really do love our little village. We hope to welcome you very soon!
